Despite not having a harbour, Deal was once a major port and has a long association with the Royal Marines who were stationed at barracks in Deal and Walmer from 1869 to 1996 when the corps relocated to Portsmouth.

Discover more about the fascinating history and the area's unique relationship with the Royal Navy. Follow a self-guided heritage walking trail beginning at Deal Castle and ending where Julius Caesar is believed to have first set foot on British soil in 55BC nearby.

Look out for the 23 embedded bronze markers to direct you around the heritage trail through Deal and Walmer.

Pick up a copy of the RM Heritage Trail leaflet from one of the visitor information centres in the district or download a copy of the map from the Royal Marines Heritage Trails website
